The Bible, The Barn & The Horses: When Heaven Met the Pasture

Silhouette of person holding a book, watching horses graze near a barn at sunrise. Warm golden tones create a serene rural scene.

Last night, I took my blanket into the cool, crisp, fall air and walked out to the pasture beneath the stars.  The night was still —the only sound was “I Can Only Imagine” playing softly with the London Orchestra.  Usually, my mares linger in the distance and maintain there safe spot right in the middle of the paddock beneath a tree.  But this time was different.

As the music swelled, I began to softly sing along: “Surrounded by Your glory, what will my heart feel?”  My younger mare, Waimea, was the first to approach - head lifted, ears flicking toward the sound.  Slowly, she stepped through the darkness until she stood facing me.  Then she rested her head gently on my shoulder, her breath warm, her presence majestic yet quiet —as if she, too, sensed the holiness of the moment.  A few moments later, my older mare, Scarlett, joined us.  Under the shimmering blanket of stars, the three of us stood together — woman and horses —wrapped in peace, harmony, and light.

The stars above seemed to pulse with the music, creation humming its own soft praise.  It wasn’t training time or feeding time —I had nothing to offer but stillness and song.  I had no expectations of this beautiful interaction.  And yet, it was enough…more than enough.

Reflection:

Sometimes, heaven brushes earth.  As the song says, “I can only imagine what it will be like when I walk by Your side.”  Maybe these quiet, surreal moments —under stars, surrounded by trust —are small glimpses of that eternal peace.

“Be still, and know that I am God.” —Psalm 46:10
