What are they?
Microplastics are plastic particles less than 5mm in diameter that originate from fragments of larger plastic items, sheeting from synthetic fibers, tire abrasions, and direct release from personal care products and industrial processes.
Why do we care?
Microplastics have been detected in human tissues raising concern about their potential health impacts however the data derived has been primarily from animal studies.
How could this potentially affect me?
Inflammation: can cause oxidative stress and inflammation in cells
Endocrine: many plastics contain chemicals like BPA or phthalates that interfere with hormones
Tissue damage: animal studies suggest these particles can accumulate in organs and lead to damage
Immune System: chronic exposure may overstimulate or suppress immune function

Can we avoid them?
No, not completely but here are some things we can do to reduce exposure.
Avoid plastic packaged food and bottled water
Use natural fibers (cotton or wool) over synthetic ones in clothes
Filter tap water (reverse osmosis)
Don’t microwave food in plastic containers
Use HEPA filters and don’t forget houseplants can act as natural air purifiers!
Regular vacuuming and mopping
Limit chewing gum - a hot topic in recent news
Incorporate antioxidant rich foods such as blueberries and red cabbage
Bottom line: you don’t need to wrap yourself in bamboo and drink dew drops from a leaf. Just make a few smart swaps from the list above and remember - stress is also toxic so don’t sweat it if you can’t make all the changes.
