In a world filled with an abundance of trendy diets, detox plans, overpriced powders and teas, it’s easy to forget that it doesn’t have to be that hard…or expensive. For women, especially in our 30’s, 40’s, and 50’s, our bodies need extra help navigating natural changes.
The good news?? True cleansing does not have to mean starving or suffering. Let’s take a look at 10 Natural Food Cleansers that we should all have on our plate:
Cruciferous Vegetables
Kale, broccoli, cauliflower, brussels sprouts ….
These powerhouse veggies contain sulforaphane and indole-3-carbinol (aka helps your liver break down excess estrogen and toxins). Think of them as natural hormone helpers especially during perimenopause and menopause.
Try this: roast a mix of Brussels sprouts and cauliflower in olive oil and garlic for a hormone-loving side dish.
2. Lemons & Limes
These citrusy fruits are rich in vitamin C and help stimulate bile flow — essential for moving toxins out of the liver and into the digestive tract for elimination.
Morning ritual: a warm glass of lemon water can gently nudge your digestion and lymphatic system awake (had a really good friend in med school who did this religiously).
3. Beets
Not my favorite but maybe we can cover them in chocolate 😊 Beets are rich in betaine, a compound that supports liver detoxification and reduces inflammation. They also promote healthy blood flow —great for energy and mental clarity (watch out for beeturia though - too much beets can turn your urine red/brown! Not a threat but it can happen).
Pro tip: add shredded raw beets to salads or blend Ito a berry smoothie for an antioxidant boost.
4. Garlic & Onions
These humble kitchen staples (gotta say I love garlic) contain sulfur compounds that support detoxification of heavy metals, estrogen metabolites, and other environmental toxins. They’re also immune-boosting and gut-friendly (and don’t they keep vampires away?:))
Rooted Reboot Idea: sauté onions and garlic in bone broth or olive oil as a base for soups and stews.
5. Turmeric
This golden spice is a powerful anti-inflammatory and liver-loving herb. Curcurmin, the active ingredient, enhances bile flow and supports detoxification enzymes.
Try this: golden milk with turmeric, cinnamon, and plant-based milk before bed.
6. Flaxseeds
Highly regarded and a woman’s best friend when it comes to hormone balance. They are packed with fiber and lignans that bind excess estrogen in the gut and help eliminate it — naturally.
Pro tip: use ground flax (not whole) in smoothies, yogurt, or oatmeal for optimal absorption.

7. Leafy Greens
Think spinach, arugula, Swiss chard, dandelion greens.
These greens are rich in chlorophyll, magnesium, and plant-based nutrients that purify the blood and gently support liver function. Dandelion greens, in particular, are a known liver tonic (who knew).
Green goddess moment: toss together an arugula and beet salad with lemon vinaigrette for a detox-supportive lunch.
8. Cilantro & Parsley (I’ve really enjoyed growing these along with my other herbs 🌿)
These herbs aren’t just pretty garnishes - they are natural detoxifiers that help the body eliminate heavy metals and other stored toxins.
Cleanse combo: add a handful to your morning green smoothie or blend into chimichurri for grilled fish or vegetables.
9. Green Tea
Loaded with catechin, green tea helps your liver break down toxins and supports metabolism and fat oxidation. Bonus: it’s also a skin-clarifier!
Rooted Ritual: swap your second coffee for a cup of matcha or sencha to support detox without the crash.
10. Berries
Berries are high in anti-oxidants, fiber, and polyphenols that reduce oxidative stress, support the gut, and keep blood sugar stable.
Daily habit: top your yogurt, smoothie bowl, or salad with a handful of blueberries or raspberries.
The Missing Piece? Hydration!!!
You can eat all the cleansing foods in the world — but if you’re not hydrated, your body won’t eliminate effectively. Aim for 2-3 liters of filtered water daily. Add cucumber, lemon, or mint for bonus benefits (seems so much better when the nice hotel on the beach does this for you 😊)
Bottom line…detox doesn’t have to mean deprivation. Gentle, grounded, and rooted in nature—that’s our kind of cleanse.
