Loneliness: The Silent Health Epidemic  (And What You Can Do About It)

Woman sits on floor, hugging knees in a dark room. Sunlight casts striped shadows. Mood is somber. She wears a gray top and blue jeans.

Loneliness.  To admit such a thing requires humility.  It requires introspection.  It requires vulnerability. But, it’s important to acknowledge……

Did you know that chronic loneliness can be as harmful as smoking 15 cigarettes a day??? Yet, we find ourselves in a world where many women, especially those of us in midlife and beyond, feel isolated, unheard, or unseen.

At Rooted Health, we believe healing begins with connection: to yourself (soul care), to others, and to God.

The Health Effects of Loneliness:

  • Increased risk of heart disease and stroke

  • Weakened immune system

  • Disrupted sleep

  • Higher rates of depression and anxiety

  • Cognitive decline and dementia

In other words, connection is kinda important.

Why Midlife Women Are Especially at Risk:

Midlife is full of transitions!!

  1. Children leaving home

  2. Career changes

  3. Caregiving for aging parents

  4. Hormonal changes

And most of the time, all of these happen in a very short period of time leaving women feeling isolated even in busy households or social circles.

Silhouetted person sits on a bed, facing a bright window in a dim room. The mood appears contemplative and serene.

The Spiritual Side of Loneliness:

As Christians, we believe God designed us for community….”It is not good for man to be alone” (Genesis 2:18).  Yet, in times of greatest despair and loneliness we may find that our comfort comes from strengthening our relationship with Him while seeking for meaningful connection with others.

Practical Ways to Heal Loneliness:

  1. Invest in real life community - Join a walking group, Bible study, or book club.

  2. Prioritize face-to-face time - Even one coffee date a week can reduce isolation.

  3. Use technology wisely - texts and social media should support - not replace - genuine connection.

  4. Nurture your body - Exercise, balanced nutrition, and sleep regulate mood and resilience.

  5. Lean into faith - Prayer, worship, and fellowship anchor you in something greater than yourself.

Rooted Health’s Approach:

I want this group of women to become an internal support system for one another.  I want this to be more than a place where you come to get your blood pressure checked or get a medication refill.  My mission is to help you flourish physically, emotionally, and spiritually.  If loneliness is weighing on you, you are not alone.  Healing is possible.
