What exactly is “mindfulness” and what are the core principles?

  • Present-moment awareness - focusing on the now

  • Non-judgmental observation- accepting without labeling experiences as good or bad

  • Intentional focus - actively directing attention to thoughts, feelings, breath, surroundings

  • Acceptance and compassion - embracing emotions and experiences with kindness

So why all the hype?

  • Reduces stress and anxiety by lowering cortisol levels

  • Improves depression symptoms

  • Enhances emotional resilience - helps ward off negative thoughts and encourages self compassion

**In a meta-analysis in JAMA, 2014, “mindfulness meditation is as effective as antidepressants in reducing anxiety and depression.”

  • Enhances focus and attention

  • Increases brain plasticity

**Harvard Study (2011, Psychiatry Research:Neuroimaging) - 8 weeks of mindfulness meditation increased gray matter density in the hippocampus (learning/memory)

  • Lowers blood pressure

  • Boosts immune function
